COVID-19

April 30th, 2020

Dear St Eugene Camp Parents, Campers, and Volunteers:

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!

The new normal ushered in by the COVID-19/Coronavirus Pandemic has time and time again demanded that we make sacrifices not just for our own safety, but for the safety and well-being of our neighbor. Whether that means wearing an uncomfortable mask in public, waiting until the senior hour at the grocery is over before going shopping, or watching the Divine Services online instead of driving to church, there is little that can surprise us at this point. However, we do all these things willingly in order to practice obedience.

Our beautiful Timber Mountain Campsite run by Sugar Pine Christian Camps in Oakhurst, CA has finally been closed for all summer programming due to the current pandemic. With the beginning of camp being 8 weeks away, we simply cannot secure another site and guarantee its adequacy and safety in time. Regretfully, but also with confidence that this ensures the safety and well-being of all, I must announce that St Eugene Camp’s July 5th-11th 2020 program is cancelled.

Sugar Pine has graciously applied our deposit for next year and locked in our usual Fourth of July time slot. Therefore, I am pleased to encourage you all to mark your calendars for St Eugene Camp at Timber Mountain July 4th-10th, 2021!

We will be finalizing our refund process by the end of the week. Please expect another message next week outlining the options for those who have already registered. Our Planning Committee will be meeting May 14th to begin planning for 2021 as well as to discuss possible mini ‘replacement programs’ this year.

Thank you, as always, for all your continued support and participation.

Dear St Eugene Camp Parents, Campers, and Volunteers:

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!

We on the planning committee for St Eugene Camp are continuing to closely monitor National, State, and Local news and ordinances regarding the mitigation of COVID-19. The good news I have for you is our committee is in no way hampered by financial considerations on whether or not to hold camp. In other words, we will not be ‘forced’ to try and hold camp even if conventional wisdom dictates that to be a bad idea. Bottom line: if we cannot come together safely, we will not come together. The health and well-being of your children and our volunteers is too precious.

However, even if perhaps the news increasingly suggests we cancel camp, we are indeed still continuing on with planning work. That way, if camp can happen, then -- Glory to God! -- we will be ready. If it can’t this year, then we have a firm foundation on which to build next year’s program. Considering today’s climate, this is as close to a win-win as you can get!

Let me also take this time to let you know that we are still very low on adult volunteers, especially, as always, cabin counselors. As you probably know, we need at least two adults per cabin. With 6-8 cabins (usually) that means we need 12-16 counselors. As of right now, we have six (6)! I am humbly requesting that you help in the recruiting process (even if this means recruitment for next year). Please direct any interested party to: https://www.steugenecamp.org/volunteer. If we do not have the necessary numbers by May 31st, COVID-19 or not, we cannot have camp.

If we have to cancel camp, please know that we are already working on the best ways to reimburse you if you have already completed registration, whether that means a full refund or a rollover reservation for next year.

I am continually impressed by the enthusiasm, diligence, and care I witness working with our volunteer camp committee. You can rest assured that whatever decision we come to will be in the best interest for all.

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!

Dear St Eugene Camp Parents, Campers, and Volunteers:

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever!

I am sure that at this point we have all thought about what is going to happen with camp given the nature of the COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic in our country at the moment. Indeed, it dominated much of our planning committee’s recent teleconference -- as it should at this point.

The short answer to the question ‘is camp happening this year’ is: at this point, yes. July, while not all that far away in the long run, is still too distant a date to call off camp at this point. We are all working as best we can to develop the same quality programming that St Eugene’s is accustomed to offering.

Please rest assured that I am in weekly contact with the director of guest services at our host location, Sugar Pine Christian Camps, to find out any updates. A result of these updates is that at this point our First Aid Manager will be taking temperature readings upon arrival and anyone with an elevated temperature, or who is not feeling well, will be sent home.

I am also regularly processing all the great (and continuously updated) resources on the American Camp Association (ACA) website: https://www.acacamps.org/resource-library/coronavirus-information-camps

So: continue to register your kids! And: continue to sign up to volunteer! Remember that the total for registration is not due when you begin your application -- just the registration fee. If, in the future, it is determined that we do indeed have to cancel camp, refunds would be issued.

I would like to thank each and every one of you, newcomers and camp veterans alike, for your support and care for St Eugene Camp. I am at this point reminded of the prayer of the Optina Elders said at St Eugene Camp every morning after the Gospel reading and sermon: O Lord “in unforeseen events let me not forget that all is sent down from Thee… Grant me the strength to endure the fatigue of the coming day and all that takes place during it. Guide my will and teach me to pray, to believe, to hope, to be patient, to forgive, and to love. Amen!”

We will be updating you regularly.

May God bless you and keep you.
